Part of my journey back to basic has been finding more natural alternatives to household cleaners and beauty products. One of the first items I chose to look into was deodorant. I purchased several different brands, some claimed to be aluminum free, and some claimed to be completely natural. But NONE of them worked for me. I either: got a major rash, my skin peeled off, or I just stunk.

Determined to find something that was not only natural but actually worked; I went on a mission to find the answer. I did and it works! – not only for me but my husband too, even after a full day of physical activity.

Now, I don’t normally discuss perspiration issues with strangers at dinner parties. But natural products came up one day when I met a friend-of-a-friend at a BBQ. She told me about this super simple option and encouraged me to try. So, thank-you to April for sharing with me what I’m about to share with you. If you are looking for a natural alternative, please try it – I’d love to know if it works for you too.

What is Magnesium hydroxide?

Magnesium hydroxide occurs naturally as the mineral brucite. It is commonly used in cosmetics as a filler, absorbent or pH buffer and neutralizer. In water it forms a suspension known as milk of magnesia, which has long been used as an antacid and a laxative.

How does Magnesium hydroxide work as a deodorant?

Perspiration itself does not smell. However, it does provide a warm, moist environment for bacteria to grow. It’s these bacteria that produce the unpleasant odor we commonly experience when sweating. Applying magnesium hydroxide (an alkaline) topically to the skin effectively absorbs oils and neutralizes acids. This balances out the environment and counteracts odor causing bacteria.
