Why you’ll love Homemade Apple Pop

Healthy Probiotics: made from homemade water kefir this drink is full of healthy-gut nutrients. (I show you how to make the water kefir here, don’t worry it’s really easy!) During the fermenting process the kefir culture feeds off the natural sugars in the juice, by the time you drink it – it’s pretty close to sugar free.

Simple Ingredients: Just a few basic ingredients and some patience is all you need. You don’t have to be super precise with your measuring, this recipe is very forgiving.

Alcohol-free: Similar in taste to apple cider this delicious alternative is alcohol-free. A great option for dinner parties, younger people or those how would rather avoid alcohol.

Refreshing and Fizzy: Serve chilled for a thirst-quenching refreshment.

Fun to make: If you’re anything like me – having bottles of fermenting goodness sitting about the kitchen means not only am I making healthy options for my family but they are decorative too.

Fun to Open: This homemade Apple Pop is called POP for a reason. It’s really important you use good quality Swing Top Bottles, a normal screw-top lid will explode. Open with caution and be ready for the POP!

Tools you will need to make Homemade Apple Pop

  • 750mL Swing Top Bottles (preferably Amber). It’s really important you use good quality Swing Top Bottles, a normal screw-top lid will explode.
  • 1/3 measuring cup
  • Funnel

How to make Homemade Apple Pop

Stage One of Fermentation – Make Coconut Water Kefir

Allow the water kefir to ferment for 24-48 hours. You will know it’s ready because tiny bubbles will be forming and when you release the lid you will hear a fizz.

Stage Two of Fermentation – Making the Apple Pop Drink

  • Thoroughly wash and dry your Swing Top Bottles – if they have been sitting for a while it’s a good idea to sterilize them. Allow to cool before use.
  • Using a medium size funnel to avoid spills, pour 1/3 Cup of Water Kefir into each 750mL bottle.
  • Top up with apple juice, stopping at the bottom of the bottle neck to leave ‘head-space’.
  • Ensure the swing-top lid is secure.
  • Allow to sit for 48+ hours at room temperature.
  • Test to see if the fermentation process has finished by carefully releasing the swing-top lid. If bubbles start to quickly rise (like opening a bottle of soda) it’s ready. BE CAREFUL this drink is called “Pop” for a reason. With fermentation comes gas, with gas pressure!!
  • If it’s ready; chill in the refrigerator for at least a few hours. Serve cold.

How long can I store Apple Pop

At room temperature the bottles of Apple Pop are fine for up to a week – just remember the longer you let it ferment the more “POP” you will get when you open it.

After about a week it’s a good idea to store the bottles in the fridge. This helps slow down the fermenting process. I have kept some of my fermented Pop in the fridge for several weeks and it’s been fine – so long as it’s in swing-top bottles (screw-top bottles will explode).

Enjoy!
