Why you’ll love this home made hot chocolate mix

This simple, yet delicious hot chocolate powder is made with two simple ingredients. It contains no chemicals, preservatives, hydrogenated oils or artificial flavorings. And because there are no fillers or bulking agents it’s naturally gluten free.

Firstly, Organic Raw Cacao – rich in magnesium and iron, is an antioxidant superfood. It contains no chemicals, promotes healthy skin and is even said to help subdue headaches.

Second, Organic Raw Golden Sugar – made from the juice of organically grown sugar cane that has been boiled down, evaporated and then ground into fine crystals. A far better option than highly processed refined white sugar due to its minimal processing with no chemicals. It offers a subtle, delicate sweetness.

Cacao vs Cocoa

People have asked me why I choose cacao rather than cocoa. For me it simply comes down to the added health benefits of cacao.

Cacao is unprocessed, meaning the beans are either raw or roasted at low temperatures.

Whereas cocoa is made from beans that have been high temperature roasted. Often alkalized it has approximately 60% of the minerals removed.

What you need to make your own hot chocolate powder

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup organic raw golden sugar
  • 1/4 cup organic raw cacao powder or cacao nibs

Tools

Measuring cups, magic bullet (or other chopping/processing appliance with a cutting blade), glass jar for storage, funnel for pouring (if desired).

How to make home made hot chocolate powder

Step One

In the tumbler of the magic bullet, add the golden sugar and raw cacao powder/nibs. Secure the cutting blade and pulse for approximately 30 seconds until a fine powdered texture is achieved. (This may take a little longer if using cacao nibs.)

Step Two

Transfer the hot chocolate powder into a clean, dry, glass container with a well-fitting lid. Keep out of direct sunlight until ready to use. Makes approximately 12 servings.

Step Three

Place 1 tablespoon of the hot chocolate powder into a mug, add approximately 1/3 Cup boiling water. Stir well.

Step Four

Add milk of choice – I like warmed, non-homogenized cow’s milk but you can use almond milk or any other dairy free option.

Step Five

For a fuller, fluffier hot chocolate – whisk with a milk frother until desired bubbliness. For an extra treat add a couple of marshmallows to melt on top.

Enjoy!
